My name is Lesley & I have been practicing yoga for 15 years & after a career change I have been teaching yoga in Ottery since 2010 & have many inspiring students ranging in ages from 13 to 90! Yoga enriches my life in so many ways & I am always striving to pass this wonderful lifestyle onto my existing & new students.
Some of you may have tried yoga before & it could be that time to restart & give yourself that much needed ‘me’ time. For those of you who have not, this could be your time to start something new & meet some great, new folks & help improve your health. My reply to the comment ‘I need to be flexible’ is to say to people that there is not a perfect yoga posture. We are all different regarding flexibility & movement & flow into yoga stretches & postures in a way that is safe & appropriate for you as an individual & within your abilities
Yoga’s roots began as a spiritual discipline some 5000 years ago (of which it still is), but it is so much more – for physical & emotional wellbeing. In recent years there has been an increasing trend in yoga research meaning that the many health benefits from yoga practice are being proven. Mindful yoga breathing is one example where the science of yoga is gaining ground & helping people in daily life. Stress at any age is becoming a huge problem for a lot of people & yoga is proving to be an answer for this. Yoga’s relaxed controlled breathing makes you feel less anxious and calms an overactive/ tired & burnt out mind. It has a positive effect on the mind & is one of the quickest ways to move from feeling stressed to feeling good. As our breath lengthens, it signals a body wide relaxation response & release from tension.
Mindfulness fits neatly into our yoga practice & for me personally the combination of yoga & mindfulness creates a calmness & spaciousness of the mind & a release physically & emotionally from tension. Sometimes we are not aware that we have tension in our bodies unless we experience at least a moment of the opposite state of being – of profound healthfulness & healing. The list of health benefits are endless & include IBS, anxiety/ stress, sleep, menopause, helping to lower blood pressure, MS , ME (gentle yoga class), bone density, mobility & balance & so much more.
In relation to activity levels, a yoga practice can be gentle & nurturing, but it can also be a vigorous intensity activity. It is undeniable that exercise can have profound benefits for physical & emotional health. This is without question but there are also many additional benefits that yoga can have over & above what exercise can offer. Yoga is mindful movement incorporating the movement with the breath & is a practice for embodying body, mind & spirit.
A recent article in the British Wheel of Yoga magazine has just highlighted a gentleman who has been practicing yoga, its breath & meditation & has just celebrated his 100th birthday. His advice – “Keep going right to the end, stay active in mind, body & spirit”. He still looks so fresh faced & relaxed & is still practicing gentle yoga.
I feel very fortunate to be a yoga teacher & I would like to thank all of my students for continuing to inspire me & for your warmth, friendliness & the effort that you all make. It is so rewarding for me as your teacher.

I will also be recommencing my Restorative Yoga & Yoga Nidra. My October class is now full & the December class will be Sunday 10th December from 2 until 4pm followed by tea & chocs.
